JAZZ IMPROVISERS WORKING IN TODAY’S NEW YORK SCENE

The Brooklyn-based Common Quartet features the sleekly swinging team of Seth Trachy/ts, Nitzan Gavrieli/p, Pablo Menares/b and Alex Wyatt/dr, and they are adept at creating some hip and suave grooves on this highly enjoyable release. Trachy has a Getz-like warmth to his tenor, and it works well on the post bop “ Zam” and muscular “Bigfoot” while Wyatt’s ride cymbal drives the team along on a hip bopper of “Lazy Bird.” Gavrieli and Menares do some nimble work on “ Don’t Hide,” while guest Steve Cardenas brings his guitar to team up with Wyatt’s brushes on the subtle “Gemmi” and deeply pocketed “Empty Castle.” Lots to like here; give it a chance.

ALL ABOUT JAZZ MAY 28, 2017

AN UNCOMMONLY TERRIFIC DEBUT

“The Common Quartet is a relatively unknown group of players from the Brooklyn, NY jazz community presenting their debut album entitled The Hive delivering an audacious set of modern jazz original tunes from members of the band and stellar interpretations of two standards….An uncommonly terrific debut from the Common Quartet as The Hive so ably demonstrates. A solid foundation from which to expand boundaries and obtain critical attention. Seth Trachy and crew have something here that Brooklyn may not contain much longer, well done!”
